Lady Knights Take a Close 2nd Place @ State

The Lone Peak Girls Tennis Team competed @ State on Oct. 9th and 12th. When the dust had settled on Saturday October 12th , the Girls finished with 20 total points. Davis High School edged the Knights for the State Championship with 22 points. While there were many highlights of the tournament, the State Championship by the 1st doubles team of Haley Schettler & Lauren Allen was maybe the best highlight.
The girls played their hearts out and I could not have been more proud of how they competed and 'left it all on the court.
At 1st singles, Leah Heimuli mowed opponents down in the first 2 rounds and in Saturdays semifinal rematch of last years 2nd singles final, she played Breezy Turley from Davis HS, who she lost to last year in straight sets. Leah won the first set and seemed poised to take the match but she lost a hard fought match in 3 sets.
At 2nd singles, Morgan Hall lost one game in her 1st three matches and went up against Whitney Turley from Davis HS in the final, Though Morgan lost in straight sets, she played some of her best tennis of the year. Morgan and Leah are both sophomores and it will be exciting to see what they can accomplish over the next 2 years.
At 3rd singles, Electra Cochran also breezed through her 1st three matches, losing only one game before playing Eliza Hafen from Davis in the finals. Both girls were evenly matched and played long points, a tribute to their consistency. Electra eventually lost in a tough two set match but not before giving it her all throughout the match.
At 1st doubles, Haley Schettler and Lauren Allen had an interesting road and nearly did not make the 2nd day of competition, going up against a tall athletic duo from Brighton High School in the 2nd round. After losing the first set, Haley and Lauren won the last two sets 6-4,6-3. In the semi's they quickly dispatched Davis High School, setting up a final with Bingham HS, a match they won 7-5, 6-2.
In 2nd doubles, JJ Bitton & Sarah Nielson, in their first exposure to State Competition, ran through their first 2 matches and won their semifinal match with relative ease before also going up against a Bingham team in the final. Fighting the Bingham team and some jitters proved too much for the girls as they lost a tough two set match.

All in all, a tremendous season for the girls this year, one that they, their parents, certainly the Coaches and all of Lone Peak can be proud of!
